Pink Pussyhats

On 21 January 2017, following Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, women marched the streets wearing knitted or sewn pink hats with cat ears to reclaim the term pussy and femininity. The Pussyhat Project was created to unite protesters during the womens’ march in order to visually create a sea of pink flooding the streets and empower women. However, controversy ensued with the pink pussyhat, as women of colour and transgender communities felt the symbol was not inclusive. The aim of the march was to convey the message that women’s rights are human rights.
